Movies and miscellaneous junk
Jon and I went to see Sin City last Friday. Great movie. Extremely violent, but great movie nonetheless. Elijah Wood seems to have this goal of distancing himself as an actor as far as possible from Frodo - he’s played a weird/freakish character in every movie I’ve seen that he’s been in since LotR. The gleam of his glasses was superb though; that’s so comic bookish.
Also found out that we may be getting a nice tax refund this year. I’m a little suspicious though, because TurboTax claims there’s a law in Virginia stating that if you work as a federal or state employee and earn less than $15,000 (which pretty much describes me), then you can deduct up to the total amount of your yearly salary from your taxable income. Naturally, that results in a big return for us. However, I’ve never heard of this law before; one of the guys I work with has, but he didn’t think it was still in effect, so we may or may not actually be getting this nice refund. If we do get it though, we’re going to get us a nice new TV. Whee~
Update: good news, another of the people I work with has heard of this law and actually used it last year. So I’m cautiously hopeful that the return will go through all good. Woot.
Update part II: Return went through. Super TV will be ours~

I recently came across an interesting podcast (KCRW’s The Treatment) with a fascinating interview with Frank Miller, the creator of the Sin City graphic novels. He was also directly involved with the movie which was kept very very close to the books. The more I hear people talking about it, the more determined I am to go see it.

One of the things that was really neat about Sin City (it’s really awful that I keep wanting to type Sim City there…) is the overall film style - it’s black and white with splashes of color. Very film noir in style. Interestingly enough, Quentin Tarantino directed one “chapter” of the movie; there were three, essentially, each following a different character and apparently directed by a different person. Overall, it was a fascinating movie, as long as you can stand the violence (and there was a lot of that). I enjoyed it a lot, though some of that may be colored by the really kickass ninja prostitute, Miho, from Tarantino’s section.
