Fun with words
Sometimes I find myself thinking about strange things. Today, I was reading an old article from ALA that used the word snarky in the first paragraph and inspired this post.
For reasons I don’t entirely comprehend, I love the word snarky. I love the brand of humor it inspires, I love characters who could be described by it, I love the way it sounds. Weird, ne? So, I find myself curious. Does anyone else have a favorite word? If so, what do you like about it?

The word ‘ragamuffin’ springs to mind. I wouldn’t say this is my favorite word though, since I think this is the first time it’s ever intruded upon my thoughts.

This reminds me of the word “smarmy,” which is not necessarily my favorite word, but a very useful one, as it perfectly describes certain people while being a satisfying word to use in such manner. For example, repeat after me: “Matthew McConaughey is a smarmy guy.” Feels good, eh? Also, a co-worker of mine insists on pronouncing it “schmarmy,” which I find to be much more effectual and fun to say. Now that I think about it, “schmarmy” is one of my favorite words.

Smarmy is one of my co-worker’s favorite words as well. It just doesn’t have the bite to it that snarky does, I think. A very good and useful word though.

Words are sort of like icecream flavors. The more you that you learn exist, the harder it becomes to isolate one as your favorite. But, being that I’m on a portuguese kick, I pick terraplenagem (earth-moving).
