After Move: Week 1
Well, Jon and I managed to get all our crapstuff moved to our shiny new townhouse. It was a hell of a weekend. We had the remnants of Ernesto move through on Friday, when my mom and I were doing some shopping and last minute packing; fortunately, Senor Ernesto saw fit to move on north before Saturday morning, when the movers came. If not for the movers, this weekend would have been a hellish nightmare. How on earth do we accumulate so much junk? I mean, it doesn’t seem like we have all that much stuff, but it took two trips in the movers’ huge truck to get everything here. I guess it was kind of like 1.5 truckloads, really, but still.. that’s a ton of stuff.
Anyway, the new place is pretty awesome. No creepy neighbors (just two college guys that I hope don’t have too much of a tendency to party), hurray. We have a garage, now, so my new car doesn’t have to sit out in the sun all afternoon. I think Jon’s a little jealous though, since it’s only big enough to hold one car. 
If I can find my digital camera software so I can download my pictures, I’ll post some; the new place is spiffy. We don’t have what I would consider “real” internet yet; what we’ve got is about the equivalent of dial-up and not always reliable, but at least we’re not completely unconnected. We still have a whole lot to do to get unpacked, anyway, so maybe it’s for the best.

Congrats on moving to the new place. I hope the neighbors are much better than the old ones. I remember you ranting about them previously. I also remember my move from my apartment to my house and all the crap that I somehow managed to accumulate. I didn’t even have all that much furniture. Now, after living here for 3 years, the amount of stuff I have is mind-boggling. It would take me forever to get everything packed.
I look forward to the pictures.
I thought about posting a comment to your last post, but the comments you got made me decide not to. I think that on the whole, there are more divorces nowadays in any case. In the end, causation is not correlation.

Jury is still out on the new neighbors. They’re college students (Daddy bought them a nice townhouse in a residential area, God only knows why) and had a huge, loud, annoying party last week. Our landlord went and talked to them early this week, because our Home Owner’s Association has covenants against noise of the volume they were making. Supposedly they said they’d talked about it and were going to move their parties to a more party-friendly neighborhood, but we’ll see. Still, they’ve been warned that if they have another party and ignore repeated polite requests to be quiet again, we will call the cops. Maybe that $200 minimum fine per person will convince them that it isn’t worth it to party here. They seem nice enough when they aren’t drunk, at least.
I was going to rant about them on Friday night while I couldn’t sleep, but our internet service really sucks right now, and I couldn’t even get to my blog. Probably a good thing, anyway, since I was more furious than I’ve been in a long time. I hate that these guys can turn me into an ogre like that, but I just don’t get how they can move into what is obviously a family neighborhood and think it’s okay to party loudly until 4am. I had been up for 22 hours by that time. The only reason they got away with it is because we’re the only other unit on the line that’s actually occupied, and when we called our landlord, she asked us to let her speak to them before we called the cops on them. *grumble*

Ouch. I remember the last time you ranted about your neighbors, and how difficult it made things in your old place. I’ve been lucky that most of my neighbors are families and don’t tend to really throw parties all that much. Of course, this tends to mean that there aren’t all that many people my age in the neighborhood, but I’ll live.
I don’t think I’ve ever called the cops on a late night party (thinking back to college and my apartment), but I came close a couple of times. I can see not calling the cops if the party is loud at 1 am (speaking to them first at that hour), but 4 am just isn’t right in a non-college neighborhood.
Oh, and sometimes the furious rantings are the best ones to read. So next time, let it all out.
And I goofed on my line in the first post.. correlation is not causation (not the other way around).

Meh, even 1am is too late for me. I’m hardly ever up that late these days, since I get up at 6am for work. They actually came over before the party started to let us know about it, and invited us to drop by and let them know if they were ever too loud; eventually the bass was so loud that there was nowhere in the house that we could escape it, despite multiple requests for them to turn it down. I don’t want to have to call the cops; I’m lazy, I don’t really want to deal with that. I’d much rather just go to sleep, ya know?
But at the same time, the boys need to learn that, even though they’re in college, they’re living in a “real world” neighborhood, and they have to abide by the rules or take the consequences. Our landlord specifically chose a townhouse in a neighborhood with noise regulations and covenants so that we could avoid this sort of problem; unfortunately, our neighbors’ dad decided to do something nice for his kids and simultaneously make a sound real estate investment, without regard for the type of people who would probably be living there. Any loud music or conversation that can be heard from the street (and it could be, last week) violates our covenants. The kids have been given a relatively friendly warning, this time. They seem like nice enough guys though, so hopefully the one time is enough.
Of course, a lot of this could be solved if we would just suck it up and buy a house somewhere.. Just not sure we’re ready to settle down that much yet.

I still manage to be a bit of a night owl, even though I’ve entered the “real life” stage of life. I can see how 1 am is rather late for some people though.
However, you’re right, they should’ve turned things down after you asked. And sleep is much more preferable to having to yell at neighbors. I do hope that they realize that they don’t live in a college neighborhood, and they keep things down in the future. I know you guys don’t want to have to deal with the noise or the thoughts of trying to find a new place.
As for a house, give it a bit of time… the market is becoming soft and house prices have been dropping. They probably will continue this in the future too, at least for awhile. You don’t want to get stuck upside-down in a house loan, with the market being the way it is now. And it makes things more difficult to up and go somewhere else if you decide not to stay in Harrisonburg. I know with my mortage, I’m going to be here for the next couple of years for sure, so I don’t lose too much money from my refinance last summer.
